Basketry

Basketry is one of the oldest branches of handicraft.

Nature has provided Crete with various plants that can be used in basket-making: reed, wicker, oleaster-wild olive, myrtle, wheat or barley stalks (rάpi) and so on. With these and very few tools, baskets were woven all over Crete, in various shapes and sizes, designed to meet specific everyday needs.

Techniques differ depending on the region and the types of basket. Baskets were used for agricultural tasks, fishing and trading transactions.
