Chrysi Angelidaki Collection

Chrysi Angelidaki, née Zakakis, was born in the village of Loutra in 1884 and died in Rethymnon in 1982. She loved the traditional handicraft of her native island and is a landmark figure in the history of embroidery on Crete.

She wove, she embroidered, she knitted. But she was always anxious that, as time went by, the looms would cease working and a tradition going back centuries would be lost. And so she sought ways of rescuing it.

After many attempts, she invented a special stitch  -the Rethimnian stitch- which made it possible to transfer the Rethymniot textiles to embroidery.
