Arkadi

The words ‘FREEDOM OR DEATH’ became reality with the explosion of the Arkadi Monastery on 8 November 1866.

The self-sacrifice and death of the Cretan men and women, who had willingly withdrawn to the monastery in order to avoid falling into the hands of the Ottoman Turks, shocked the entire world. Many philhellenes wrote about the episode in the foreign press and supported the Cretans by sending supplies and ammunition to the island.
