She loved the traditional handicraft of her native island and is a landmark figure in the history of embroidery on Crete.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">She wove, she embroidered, she knitted. But she was always anxious that, as time went by, the looms would cease working and a tradition going back centuries would be lost. And so she sought ways of rescuing it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">After many attempts, she invented a special stitch<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>-the Rethimnian stitch- which made it possible to transfer the Rethymniot textiles to embroidery.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Chrysi Angelidaki, n\u00e9e Zakakis, was born in the village of Loutra in 1884 and died in Rethymnon in 1982.
