Pottery

The long tradition of pottery-making in Crete is attested by high-quality ceramics, many of which date back to prehistoric times (cf. Minoan ‘Eggshell Ware’). In recent times there were important traditional centres of pottery production, such as the village of Margarites in Mylopotamos 28 km. from Rethymnon, Thrapsanos in the district of Pediada 20 km. from Herakleion, Kentri about 10 km. northwest of Hierapetra, Nochia 20 km. west of Chania, as well as individual pottery workshops of lesser importance (e.g. Atsipoulo, Karoti).
