Threadwork

Threadwork compositions were born in the wider area of the Eastern Mediterranean and developed in parallel with basketry and weaving. They became more sophisticated in the Byzantine Age and various techniques were practised in many parts of Greece, particularly at the crossroad that Crete has always been.

Threadwork is the generic term for the ways and techniques of intertwining or knitting threads that create openings or eyelets (à-jour) between the motifs. It includes bobbin lace (kopanéli), crochet (velonάki), tatting or shuttle lace(frivolite), macramé (desiés), finger knitting, and many others.

In the showcases of the museum there are samples of most of the different techniques.
