Traditional Rethymniot bread loaves

Each district of the province of Rethymnon had its own traditional bread loaves of local character, particularly with regard to the specially kneaded and decorated loaves associated with life-cycle events.

Certain textiles accompanied the agricultural tasks and the preparation of bread, such as the sporόvourga (seed-bag), the flour bags, the cloth to cover the loaves (artόpano or psomopetséta) left to rise in the special trough (pinakotί), and so on. In the old days, the grinding of the grain, the sieving of the flour, the kneading, forming, decorating and baking of the bread loaves, all took place in domestic space.

The special Rethemniot bread loaves vary from district to district in the province by shape and decoration (xόblia, kentίdia, stolίdia).
